High School Extra: Clarence, Lackawanna win league openers
It was opening day for league play in Western New York softball as several schools kicked off their seasons.
Clarence earned a 9-0 win over Orchard Park in ECIC I action behind the work of Jen Sansano in the circle. Sansano, an All-WNY First Team selection as a junior in 2009 and the Pitcher of the Year in 2008, picked up the win with 14 strikeouts. Amanda Atkins highlighed the Clarence offense with a double and two RBIs.
It was a dramatic ending in ECIC IV as Lackawanna defeated Alden, 7-6, in 10 innings. Kiera Diana had the game-winning RBI for the Steelers. Diana drove in four runs while going 3 for 5. Winning pitcher Amanda Mesi had 16 strikeouts. Hillary Panek took the loss, also striking out 16 batters in a complete game effort.
Megan Smith went 2 for 4 with a home run and struck out nine for Immaculata in a 9-3 win over North Tonawanda. Sarah Horvath had a homer and a double.
